March KBC Review

so bad news is that a lot of the audio recordings didn’t come out as well as i thought…some of them did, but to be fair, i just decided not to post those few…come out and check it live!

in review, however, it was a fun time…went a little something like this:

1. Blee’s Company – the bass/violin/drum machine/synth duo returned and wowed us once again with their tight musical prowness…these dudes really came out of nowhere as far as i can tell and what a wonderful example of how new bands/musicians/acts can have an outlet for their talents…nice.

2. the first collaboration was between sean sawyer on sampler/percussion and marlina mckay on violin.  the outcome was a really nice blend of bleepy blippy goodness and smooth buttery violin prowness

3. eggtooth – despite technical difficulties, this set was the most bizarre of the evening…samples and loops setting the stage for eggtooth’s babblings…crazy.

4. marlina and anna did  a rock and roll in spirit set comprised of guitar, laptop, violin and vocals…

5. yellow globe (jon cilberto, jeff g, and caleb h.) brought out the electronic vibe with a set of sweet droney synthy goodness

6. the second and final collaboration consisted of robby kee, lynlee healy, and austin healy.  it was a guitar, sampler, percussion hodgepodge of improvised awesomeness.  these serendipitous matchups are what is making this new format such a fine success.

7. next was rebecca b, david m, and robby k…samplers, guitar, and cello, combined in the most drone laden concoction you can muster in your head…thick and sweltering.

8. pony bones did a solo set next, using banjtar and vocals to summon the swamp demons out of junk country slumber and into the unsuspecting ears of the pony uninitiated.  as always, a real nasty treat.

9. zeb ended the evening with his heartfelt guitar/vocal thing he does…a fitting end to the evening.

fun times had by all.  join in next time.  bring your band, your poetry, your instrument, whatever and get involved.  awesome.

February KBC Review

thanks to everyone for coming out and making kirkwood number 2 (at eyedrum) a rousing success. in this post you’ll find the audio document of the event.

this time around, we tried something new. besides the standard signup sheet at the door, we also had a signup for collaboration efforts. these names were put in a cup and pulled out in groups of 4 and 3, randomly, for a little ol fashioned off the cuff improv sessions. these turned out surprisingly well. the energy was good and folks enjoyed themselves. we’d like to see more visual artists/artisans show up with wares to peddle, trade, display. we do have have tables available for this. if you can spread the word, please do so.

anyway, the night went a little something like this:

1. robby kee opened the show with a solid five minute drone that teetered between teeth-gnashingly brutal and soothingly pretty.

2. the bleegees kinda came out of nowhere…never seen these guys before…they pulled out some highly technical tight violin/bass stuff set to a drum machine…very nice

3. the first collaboration consisted of robby kee on samples, aaron rushetta (sp) on percussion, arianne sykes on percussion and a dude names lazlo on the bass. it ended up being a cohesive tribal assemblage in an unlikely partnership and the groove was palpable.

4. stan woodard came out next and who knows what kind of pedals and devices he was tweaking to make that sweet delicious noisy droney raket, but we liked it.

5. toothless tiger played next…the flute, bass, percussion and dual guitars was a nice change of pace and made for some wacky jammy ear candy

6. leeches and voyeurs were the harbingers of noise rock that night and their recorded set here shows both how gnarly they were and how difficult it is to accurately document gnarl.

7. the second collaboration consisted of matt cherry on synth, david norbery on samples/computer stuff, and lynlee on thunder tubes (you’ll know what i mean when you hear it. the result was an arpeggiated comfort zone with smatterings of textural samples and a thick droney buzz that tied it all together…so nice.

8. next was jared coliadis, who wowed us with his post rock-in-spirit one man guitar orchestration using loops and effects…so nice… unfortunately, this recording crackles…very unfortunate as his set was one of the more lovely moments of the evening.

9. fawn objects played next and brought with them that loose smokey evening atmospheric thing they do and that cannot quite be described…plodding guitar churns, intuitive beats, heartfelt vocals…great stuff.

10. the third collaboration was comprised of alexsaratt on vocals, sean sawyer on computer stuff, and kevin mchauhey on guitar. it was a churning affair and worked out really really well…lilting vocals, crazy sounds, and that constant guitar…

11. pony bones was a terrific delicious mess with banjtar, harmonica, drums, slide guitar, vocals, all types of unholy racket but loosely cohesive somehow…drunken country tinged swamp water vomit…nice

12. the final collaboration was made up of nicholas on guitar, cheshire on vocals, and frank on slide guitar (last names withheld at the request of the writers bad memory). it fared a touch disturbingly, a very minimal and loose concoction, but proved a fitting end to a full eclectic evening.

come out next month and join in. there will be 8 slots for signup and 16 available slots for the collaboration. as always, suggestions are welcome…we want to continue to grow and just make this thing better and better.

January KBC Review

last week’s kirkwood ballers set got off to a rousing good start. thanks to all who came and participated.

in this post you’ll find pictures and sound files from the event…choice artifacts of a sonic extravaganza indeed.

unfortunately, not all of the recordings came out, so we missed a couple of the artists…but we’ll be sure to remedy that in future posts.

fibrona started off with a droney concoction of synths and horns, a nice dreamy beginning to the eyedrum/kbc legacy. viola 2/3 cocaine adventure surprised us all with harsh noise blasts and rambunctious vocals…the new wave of atlanta noise. kevin mcgauhey played guitar and sang, deconstructing a classic rock aesthetic. grl prty further tore apart rock and roll conventions with an exciting and chaotic set of minimal percussion, drones and vocals. role was an adventurous guitar/drum duo (which unfortunately did not get recorded well enough to post..our condolences, as it was great). guhp was a drum machine, guitar, vocal one man nod to new wave sensibilities. monomania brought the night back down with bubbly synthy goodness. hurricanes of love rocked it messed-up folk stye with guitar, percussion, and tape loops. pony bones spouted out an unholy junk country set worthy of the deepest swamp. lynlee healy and drummer was another guitar drum duo, both challenging and lovely (and the other set not recorded…argh). robby kee and rebecca blankenship spaced us out with a sampler/cello set that began to wind down the evening very nicely. robby and drummer friend ended the night with a percussion laden tribal set mashed up with samples and drones.

this night reminded us of why kirkwood ballers is important and we are determined to continue the legacy with the support of the artists and musicians in this fair city who perpetually push the limits of convention, genre, and style.

come out next time and join in!
